What is profit margin?
Profit margin shows how much of your revenue remains as profit after costs. It is expressed as a percentage of revenue, so you can compare profitability across products, projects, or time periods.
How this calculator works
- Enter revenue: Add total sales or project income before you subtract costs.
- Enter costs: Include direct costs tied to delivering the work or product, such as materials, subcontractors, or production costs.
- Calculate profit: Profit is revenue minus costs.
- Calculate margin percentage: Margin percentage is profit divided by revenue, multiplied by 100.
Profit margin formula
margin % = (revenue − costs) / revenue × 100
Profit is the numerator. Dividing by revenue converts the result into a percentage of sales.
Worked example
Your business earns £50,000 in revenue and spends £35,000 on costs. Profit is £15,000. Margin percentage is (£15,000 ÷ £50,000) × 100 = 30%.
When to use this calculator
Use it to check pricing on a job, compare product lines, or see whether a project met your profitability target after costs are included.
Markup and margin use different bases. Compare both with the Markup vs Margin Calculator.
